ISPA Members Help Beat Breast Cancer

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Many organizations and industries recognize October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the spa industry is no exception. Known for their healing powers, it’s no surprise that spas and product companies are offering special treatments, raising money and volunteering time for the cause. Spa treatments such as massage, acupuncture and meditation help reduce stress and have been proven to aid in recovery time after medical procedures. Take Dr. Tinka Hrountas. During her battle with breast cancer, she incorporated spa treatments into her treatment regime. Thankfully, Dr. Hrountas is in remission and you can hear her story of how spa played a role in her recovery process.

The power of touch can be healing and spa treatments not only restore the body, but the mind and spirit as well,” said ISPA President Lynne McNees. “It’s so important to raise awareness and inform consumers about how spa experiences can help in their recovery and improve overall health. ISPA members are leading the way by developing specialized treatments and products offered throughout the year.”

A sampling of ISPA members who implemented programs that promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month include:

Gene Juarez Salons & Spas, Bellvue, WA – Every Tuesday during October the spa partnered with Susan G. Komen to provide free mammograms, foot treatments and a gift bag of skincare products.
La Costa Resort and Spa, Carlsbad, CA – Participants of the San Diego Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk can enjoy a variety of 50-minute treatments for a special price from Nov. 24-26, three days after the walk.
The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, New York, NY – The Spa for a Year raffle contest is held during October and gives the chance to win a year’s worth of spa treatments. Raffle tickets cost $50 and all proceeds go to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
The Spa at Pinehurst Resort, Pinehurst, NC – The spa hosted a Breast Cancer Awareness Day that included free treatments to survivors and a 50 percent discount to a survivor’s “breast friend.” Complimentary screenings and workshops were also a part of the special day.
Spa Gregorie’s, Newport Beach & Rancho Santa Margarita, CA – Through the spa’s Chemo Comfort program, therapists go into hospitals and perform hand and foot massages while patients receive their chemotherapy treatment. The spa also offers Oncology Massage training to therapists.
Stoweflake Resort & Spa, Stowe, VT – The spa developed a program with their local hospital called Mammogram to Massage. When you receive a mammogram at the hospital you get 25 percent off a massage treatment at the spa.
Sundara Inn & Spa, Wisconsin Dells, WI – The spa hosts the annual Breast Cancer Recovery Foundation’s Infinite Boundaries retreat. The retreat is for women with metastatic cancer and includes complimentary spa services, special cuisine and activities.
