ISPA Members Actively Promote Breast Cancer Awareness
Lexington, Ky. – The American Cancer Society estimates that more than 210 thousand women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer during 2005. This alarming statistic has motivated members of the International SPA Association to raise awareness of breast cancer and provide essential retreats for patients and survivors.
“It is only natural that the spa industry is reaching out to help raise breast cancer awareness,” said ISPA President Lynne Walker McNees. “With nearly 45 million people going to U.S. spas annually, the spa industry plays a critical role in encouraging the renewal of mind, body and spirit for breast cancer patients and survivors.”
Many ISPA members are implementing programs throughout the year, as well as during Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, to generate awareness in addition to providing a supportive environment for survivors.
- During Oct., Papillon Spa at Westgate Resort in Park City, Utah will honor breast cancer survivors with a special night at the spa. Survivors will receive a complimentary treatment as well as access to the steam room, sauna and whirlpool.
- On Oct. 15, Red Mountain Spa in St. George, Utah will offer its annual half-day Breast Cancer Spirit Hike to Lion’s Mouth, a Native American area in the Southwestern part of the state. At the site, participants may offer prayers for both victims and survivors of the disease.
- Sundara Inn and Spa in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. continually partners with the Breast Cancer Recovery Foundation (BCRF) to prepare a special offer to breast cancer survivors and supporters. Sundara will offer those in the BCRF database preferred pricing on a stay at the resort, a selection of spa services and a special menu, including a pink berry smoothie.
- Spa Gregorie’s in Newport Beach, Calif. began organizing “Greet the Day” events in 2003. To date, Greet the Day has provided a complimentary day of rejuvenation for nearly 200 guests whose lives have been affected by a diagnosis of cancer -160 of these guests have been breast cancer survivors.
Several ISPA members are donating a percentage of product sales to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
- Purity Cosmetics will donate a portion of their Oct. 2005 sales of the following products to the foundation: 100% PURE, Strawberry Butter Body Scrub, Cranberry Facial Cleansing Foam, White Tea Rose Soother, Cherry Honey Facial Polish and Nourishing Facial Oil.
- DERMAdoctor Specialist Skin Care will support breast cancer initiatives by designating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of Outlandish Pink hyper-moisturizing lip paint and treatment to benefit the foundation.
A listing of ISPA members that have made the association aware of their breast cancer awareness activities is included at the end of this document.
