International SPA Association & PricewaterhouseCoopers to Release Updated Spa Industry Study

April 1, 2010

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The International SPA Association is pleased to announce a new venture with PricewaterhouseCoopers on the latest edition of its renowned Spa Industry Study. The ISPA 2010 Spa Industry Study will offer an in-depth look into the spa industry in the U.S. It will present the newest statistics on revenues, number of spas, visits, employment and square footage. Data on male spa-goers, economic issues, greening and specific types of treatments (massage services, hydrotherapy services, spa education programs and workshops, etc.) will also be explored.

Since 1999, ISPA has been the leader in spa industry research, releasing data on spa-goers, the spa industry, consumer trends and an inaugural study on the global spa consumer. As ISPA celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, it will also be celebrating more than 10 years as the proven voice of authoritative spa industry research. The 2010 study is set to be as groundbreaking as its predecessors, the ISPA 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2007 Spa Industry Studies, which gave a comprehensive look into the types of treatments offered in spas, the immense growth of the industry and insight into challenges such as the lack of a qualified labor pool.

“We are excited to collaborate with PricewaterhouseCoopers, a worldwide leader in research, for the 2010 edition of the ISPA Spa Industry Study,” said ISPA President Lynne McNees. “The new study will provide our members with important research that helps run their businesses, and will also supply a tool for tracking and quantifying trends.”

In 2008, ISPA appointed PwC to review and validate existing spa industry research. This collaboration led to PwC becoming ISPA’s research advisor. Colin McIlheney, Global Research Director at PwC, is leading the new 2010 study. McIlheney became familiar with the spa industry a decade ago during his involvement in the original pioneering ISPA 2000 Spa Industry Study. His role in spa industry research came full circle when he presented an overview on the inaugural ISPA Global Consumer Study at the 2008 ISPA Conference & Expo.

McIlheney said, “We look forward to working together again with ISPA on this challenging and hugely important survey. It’s yet another sign that robust, reliable research is at the heart of the ISPA agenda going forward.”

The ISPA 2010 U.S. Spa Industry Study will be available to members of ISPA and the media in summer 2010.
