February 2023 Snapshot Survey-Quarterly Performance

The February 2023 ISPA Snapshot Survey asked respondents to share details about their spa or company’s fourth quarter performance (October 1 through December 31, 2022) compared to the fourth quarter of 2021. The results reported in this quarterly performance survey are based on member participation. The results further illustrate the spa industry’s continued recovery from the pandemic.

Compared to the same period in 2021, 82 percent of the spas surveyed reported an increase in fourth quarter revenue. Complementarily, 72 percent of spa respondents reported an increase in profits. Almost one-third (28 percent) saw profit increases exceeding 20 percent compared to the fourth quarter profits. Continuing in 2022 trends, spa visits were up for 75 percent of respondents.

When asked what the gross revenue change from fourth quarter of 2014 compared to the same period of 2013, 31 percent of all spas saw a 1 – 9 percent increase in revenue closely followed by 30 percent who saw 10 – 19 percent increase.

Overall, respondent data for the survey reflects growth in several areas. Among ISPA member spa respondents, 78 percent experienced an increase in gross revenue for the fourth quarter of 2016 compared to the fourth quarter of 2015.

Growth continued overall for spa respondents in the fourth quarter of 2017 compared to the fourth quarter of 2016. The majority of spa respondents, 77 percent, had a positive gross revenue change when comparing these quarters, with 20 percent of resort/hotel spa respondents reporting a gross revenue increase between 20 and 50 percent. Similarly, the majority of resource partner respondents, 87 percent, had a positive gross revenue change over this time period.

The spa industry’s growth continued in the fourth quarter of 2018 as the majority of spa respondents reported an increase in gross revenue change for the fourth quarter of 2018 compared to that of 2017 (72 percent).

The first Snapshot Survey of 2021 focused primarily on fourth quarter performance in 2020as spas continued to navigate the challenges caused by COVID-19 pandemic. A large majorityof spa respondents (67%) noted that their spas were still operating at a maximum occupancy level of 70 percent or less, with the largest number of respondents (31%) reportinga permitted occupancy level of 41 – 55 percent. However, nearly a quarter of respondents (24%) said their spas were operating at full capacity at the time the survey was completed.
